High off a successful fundraising quiz evening, the U11s travelled to the city to battle Lincoln United in a Group 2 trophy fixture.
A-League Lincoln, dressed in white shirts, red shorts and white socks showed their intent immediately. High tempo, pressing football was the story from the off. This didnโt phase Caythorpe, who after just 2 minutes, rocked the home side with a deflected opener from a kick-in.
The remainder of the first half stayed this way. Caythorpe withstood the persistent pressure resolutely, countering with our own forward pressure to give Lincoln something to think about going into the break.
The half-time team talk instructed the boys to continue exactly what they were doing. Lincoln however had the bit between their teeth. A brief spell of bad luck and some executional errors gave Lincoln the chances they needed to both square up the game, but also to take the lead in relatively quick succession.
Having a word with themselves, Caythorpe reengaged with 10 to go. Credit to the boys character. A mixture of hitting the woodwork, and a late effort which nearly lobbed the Lincoln keeper gave Caythorpe hope. It wasnโt enough however and too little, too late.
Some long faces left the field, however the boys can be proud that they stood toe to toe with a very strong Lincoln side, giving as good as they got.
Next week, the U11s take on another A-League side, in the form of local rivals Sleaford Town. This is a home fixture, promising a bumper crowd of Caythorpe supporters.
