SECRETARY & U11 ASSISTANT

Club Role

U11s Coach and Secretary

YEARS WITH THE CLUB

This will be my 5th year

WHAT GOT YOU INTO COACHING?

I played football as a junior up to U16. Naturally at that age you start to want things like a car and a job. I was no exception. Whilst I still followed football, I wasn’t involved with it in any way. The years past (some 15 years!) when my youngest son then took a liking to football, at about the time he could walk. When we moved to the village a few years later, we found ‘Summer Soccer’. This was our introduction to the club, and something I could do with my boy. At the end of our second year at Summer Soccer, a few kids were interested and so a team was

formed. Initially, Tom (Our U11 manager) stepped up to lead the show for U7. After a few touchline sessions watching, Tom ventured across to ask if I wanted to help. The rest as they say, is history. It was brilliant to be involved back in football, only this side from a coaching perspective. Since then, I’ve also laced my own boots back up again, but it isn’t as easy as being 16 again!

What do you take away from your role within the club?

Headaches usually …I have taken on several hats at the club. Each giving me different things. As a parent, the main thing I take away is watching my boy develop as a footballer.

As a coach, the biggest thing I take away is the continued development of our squad. Tom, Dan and I have had the same basic core of our group since U7. We have had some new additions on the way, but the main OGs remain. Seeing them develop from ‘bees round the honeypot’ into junior grassroots footballers is very rewarding.

As club Secretary, for my sins, the main take away is trying to direct the club to higher levels. The club was in a good position when I took the Committee role, however the vision was (and is) to take the club to the next level. This involves some late evenings for me, and July is usually very busy registering players and what not. Ultimately though, we’re heading in the right direction, getting more and more local kids playing the beautiful game

What would you say to somebody who wants to get into coaching or get involved within a grassroots club?

Just do it. It’s a pain. It’s frustrating. It’s not 9-5 and you don’t get paid. It is however tremendous fun, and you do get a lot from it.

Your favourite memory or memories from your grassroots journey so far?

Personal memories include seeing my boy score more goals each season as he progresses.

Team memories include the then U10s day out to Lincoln City Vs Exeter. We got to have a training session before the match. Go onto the pitch and wave the centre circle flag before the game. Everyone then got to meet Michael Skubala. We then all got to sit and watch the game as a team.

What would you change in grassroots football?

Personally (and possibly, controversially) I’m not a huge fan of the Future Fit incentive. I think rather than stopping kids from taking throw-ins or heading and suchlike, we should be teaching them proper technique. That’s not to say the reasons why the changes were implemented were unjust, I just believe times are different. We should be educating, not banning

Where do you see yourself or the club in 5 years?

In 5 years, hopefully I shall be embarking on my penultimate year as a coach. That will take me to U16, the exact point where I initially stepped away. As I have another son on the way however, that journey may well take me right back to the beginning to start all over again.

Favourite film

No one film in-particular. I do like the Fast & Furious films before they went to space. War films like Fury and Troy are good. There’s usually a Harry Potter or Back to The Future film on in the house.

Favourite SONG

Same thing. No one song really. Rock and Roll, Country and Western, late 90s/00s punk.

What do you do outside of football?

I like my cars and motor racing. I like getting out with the dogs and the shotgun. General bits of DIY keep me going.

WHO DO YOU SUPPORT?

Leeds United

WHO IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLAYER?

From yesteryear, Harry Kewell, Alan Smith and Mark Viduka.

Current players, I fall into the Messi over Ronaldo camp.

Prefer the no nonsense football of a Joe Rodon, John McGinn or Jude Bellingham.
